Frostbites Week 2 - 2016/17

The breeze went from zero to something, which was good. And then it varied, which made things interesting.

Warm enough to cause all the wetsuit wearing mob to sweat on the beach and have fun on the water.

The photos show lots of hunched backs. It's what people do when the question on their mind is "Where the heck is the wind gone now?".

Photos - as usual - courtesy of the DMYC team.

Lasers and capsizing IDRA14s

Twas pretty gusty this Sunday and racing was conducted inside Dun Laoghaire Harbor - which probably made the gusts worse.

Several Lasers turned out for the racing, which was nice to see.

The feature of the photos - and on the day - is probably the  multiple capsizing IDRA14s.

A glorious evening

July opened with a really great evening.

Sunshine, decent wind and - at the end - a tide to rip your underpants right off.

The videos (see example below) show the tide, but the photos show the sun to its best advantage.

And - as mentioned - on the videos you can see the tide.

That tide!  Wow.

Tuesday 28 - Glorious then wet!

Tuesday made for some wonderful pictures and - for anyone who was still outdoors somewhat later on - a really wet evening.

Results are online for all fleets.

Spectacular Solstice

All the fleets had a blast last night.

The Laser fleet had great racing last night with another healthy 15 boat turnout and winds of 2-20 knots!

Kite surfer Theo Lyttle was back in the thick of it, though perhaps getting his lines crossed at a couple of marks. Meantime the class captain was leading people astray, sailing a creative variant of the course. Results are up (see top right of this page). There's Lasering aplenty just now too with RIYC and RStG regattas coming up and Western regional Champs at Dromineer if you want to get your kit properly rinsed. This great DBSC racing should still see more boats, with the Laser class-captain appealing to get more boats on the water - maybe to bring entries to 30 and turnouts to 20.

Ben Mulligan put on great racing for all the fleets.

The Fireballs were there in force - there's often a report on afloat.ie - and the PY fleet too. Richard Tate's Finn dominated ahead of the Sailing In Dublin Vagos.

If you weren't there, you should have been!

Sunday 19th

While there was only a small fleet of PY at Saturday's NYC regatta, the usual mob turned out for Sunday's DBSC Racing.

The day turned into a battle between Laser and Finn, with Richard Tate winning the first race by 20 seconds and Conor O'Leary winning the second race by 13 seconds. Tight all the way!

The Vagos from Sailing in Dublin wrapped up the remaining finishing spots on a good day for all.  The OK Dinghy was missing on the day.

Results are on the top right in the DBSC site.

Again, please go to complete the survey from the DLDinghies mailing list and facebook page.

Big Courses, Medium Breeze, Small Fields

The forecast for the NYC regatta on Saturday 18th was light winds but Seapoint had other plans and delivered up a perfect 10-14kt westerley breeze. Coming off the land it was as shifty as Boris Johnson and there were lighter air holes into which one could fall but those who made the effort to get out racing were well rewarded.

PRO Harry Gallagher visting from HYC set some really big courses which appeared daunting at first glance but in actual fact he got the balance right with the other fleets by adjusting the number of rounds which compacted the fleets back together at the finishes.

A big Flying Fifteen fleet got away clean first, followed by a depleted (but always competitive) fireball gang. The Squibs supported the event well by mustering the usual friendly bunch.

Sunday 19th - there IS DBSC Sailing as usual

Please note this statement from the DBSC;

Hi all,

Just in case there was any doubt, this is to confirm that there will be dinghy racing this Sunday (weather permitting) as per the year book even though the NYC Regatta is on Saturday.  Please inform you class members as soon as possible to ensure a good turnout.

Best regards,

Jonathan

So - come sailing for the weekend!

Tedious Tuesday

Ok, the headline is a bit unfair since this kind of sailing can actually be hugely interesting, but alliteration is hard work on a Wednesday morning.

And it was pretty darn windless last night!

Keane Double Bullet

On a day with glorious weather it was Paul Keane's Laser that ruled the roost, beating the OK Dinghy home in both races by 20 seconds and 17 seconds.

Tom Murphy held 3rd despite sailing without his jib. Quite a performance. The others were further back.

There's a report on the OK Dinghy page, here, complete with more photos and a very rig-focused video!

Terrific Tuesday

What more could you ask for? Sun. Wind. Warm. And a world champion visiting to show you how it's done.

The PY fleet gathered in decent numbers on a Tuesday night that was worth coming out for. NE wind in the teens, a Scotsman's Bay chop that only got gnarly at the end, sunshine and Shane McCarthy in his Solo - fresh from his recent World Championship win in the GP14 fleet.  (sadly, he doesn't seem to be entered so his results don't count).

Race 1 saw the OK Dinghy get a flying start, tacking and crossing the fleet and leading out. The Finn and Solo were close behind and a dingdong battle around the course would have seen the Solo the narrow winner from the OK Dinghy with the Finn close behind. The Vagos were a little further back, but sailing around in fine style.

Race 2 saw Tate's Finn find another gear, particularly on the 2nd beat, and he reversed the finishing order from Race 1, beating the OK dinghy by a reasonable margin. Again, we don't know exactly where the Solo would have been, but rough mental arithmetic suggests he pipped the Finn in this race too.

In the Lasers there was a fantastic turnout. Something like 15 boats on the line and the usual tight racing across the whole fleet.  O'Connell won one race and Craig the other, but on balance it was O'Connell's night.

Results are - apparently - still wonky on the DBSC website, but should be updated within a few days. More as we have it.

The Fireballs saw a split title for the night, with the Clancy brothers and Butler/Oram sharing honors. Look for their report on Afloat.ie.

Murphy Dominates Sunday

No photos of Tom Murphy himself dominating Sunday's racing in his K1, but here's a file photo of a K1.

With several Vagos, several Lasers, the K1, an OK Dinghy and a Finn, the PY fleet was looking competitive. The OK Dinghy was the one closest to breaking the Murphy domination, beaten by just 4 seconds in Race 1 and 28 seconds in Race 2 but Murphy was not to be bested, gliding smoothly home in both races and making no errors on the way.

Tate's Finn and Keane's Laser fought a hard battle for third with honors shared and the infamous Tanker incident in Race 2 becoming the main (amicable) focus of discussion.

Results are online now too - see link top right.

Laser Masters, thrills and gentle spills

What a weekend's racing!  6 races, with 5 different race winners. 4 seasons in a day, on both days!  A 3 way tie for 3rd place overall and a 2 way tie for first. It's been another roller coaster Laser Masters Championship.

This popular event, open to Lasers Sailors aged 35 and over, is now in it's 10th year and firmly positioned as an annual favourite with the class members.  This year the fleet was buoyed by the presence of many new faces and also by a fledgling radial fleet - both of which are very positive future signs.

Cork as usual sent a strong contingent. Wexford too was represented, while Galway provided several of the new faces. The northern contingent from Ballyholme sent a boutique but talented squadron of challengers.

Heading upwind again, towards the Seapoint shore
Closer to home it was great to see support from Howth YC. The RStG really padded out the numbers with a large showing and local boats also launched from the RIYC, DMYC and Coal Harbour for a total of 35 racing.

Approaching a gybe mark
Ron Hutchieson was, as usual, officiating shoreside - ably assisted at registration by Sandra Moore.

An enthusiastic fleet - well up on the line!
On day 1 a brisk SW'ly met the sailors as they ventured out towards Seapoint. It was looking a lot like a tough day on the bay. Before Race 1 got underway the breeze had moderated a little but the course was still being raked by strong gusts. Choosing which side of the bay to aim for was going to be crucial.  (Click "Read Whole Article" below to see the rest of the story)

In the Radials it was SUPER close with a count-back for 1st place. Overall the results were;
  1. Paul Ebrill
  2. Shirley Gilmore
  3. David Vinell

Another sunny Sunday

A full report is online on the OK Dinghy page, here.

Top 3 in Race 1 were Sheehy, Keane, Tate. In Race 2 it was Keane, Sheehy, Tate. A tight day.

And here are some pics from Ros Bremner on the Committee Boat.

Sunny Sunday

A glorious day, finally. Sun. Warm. A bit more wind would have been nice, but let's not complain.

6 PY lined up, two Fireballs and a few IDRA14s too.

Tom Murphy's K1 led off the line in race 1, with the SID Vagos and Sheehy's OK Dinghy late to the line - the OK nearly starting with the Fireballs in the next start. Up the first beat, the OK spotted some wind to the right and made a big gain,  nearly catching the K1 by the windward mark. It actually managed to pass downwind to take the race, taking advantage of the cat rig's advantage in such light conditions. The SID Vagos struggled to beat the time limit and were eventually defeated by the combination assymetric boats hate most. Very light downwind against a strong tide is NOT fun in an assymetric.

Race 2 was sailed in similar conditions. The K1 got out ahead on the left and rounded first, with the OK Dinghy trying the right but not finding better pressure. The SID Vagos were close behind at the mark. Again the OK Dinghy managed to catch up to the K1 on the downwind leg but Murphy regained the lead after some very close gybing and finished a boatlength ahead. The OK came out best on handicap with the Vagos again struggling against - for them - very unfavourable conditions on the downwind leg.

There's more on the OK Dinghy page (https://goo.gl/G8nryc) and presumably there'll be a Fireball report on Afloat.ie. More as we have it.

Tuesdays underway

Once more inside the Harbor, but a totally different mood than last week. Quiet, warm-ish. Unfortunately the DL Harbor cameras are pointing at funny angles, but you get the idea from this picture.

LOTS and lots of Lasers turned out, with a mix of names old and new. In fact there was a mix of people too, old and new. Anyway, race 1 went to Maloney with Marmelstein only 6 seconds behind him. Pretty tight already. Race 2 was even tighter with the first ten boats finishing within a minute!  That's pretty serious stuff. O'Connell led home, followed by Keane and Craig.  See results here

PY was led home by P Ter Host in both races, both times with a decent margin. Results here. We expect more PY arrivals in the next start, with a few laggards signing up in the last few days, so anticipate tighter finishes next week.

Well done to all the sailors.

Sunday Starts!

The big change for dinghy sailing this year is the move to Sunday starts instead of Saturday.

Based on the turnout today - on the first day of the season and over a Bank Holiday Weekend - it looks like there's a positive response.

Several Lasers turned out, including one what isn't white (radical). There were also a Vago or two. And even the OK Dinghy sailed on the day but WAAAY too late to make it to the startline (tsk tsk).

With no ferry to worry about and no floating caravans blocking the bay, the dinghies can sail pretty much whereever suits best, without being forced up to Seapoint all the time. Today the racing was inside the harbor.

No results, last time we checked. Updates as and when.

Blowout!

The first Tuesday came and went and it was WINDY.  "Fresh to frightening" was the description we liked best. Plus it was COLD.

The view at the Irish
So instead of a glorious start to the season, people had a pint or stayed home.

Onwards!
